Since Ancient Times, spikenard oil has been considered one of the most prestigious natural aromatic essences, well known to the early Egyptians, and also in Asia and Rome. 

Jewish people used spikenard for fumigation and as a skin salve as well as an ingredient in the sacred incense prepared for the temple. 

Spikenard is mentioned three times in the Canticle of Canticles and is associated with Mary of Bethany, who anointed our Lords feet with this perfumed oil and then wiped them with her hair (John 12.3)
